This morning, I woke up and could only breathe out of one side of my nose. I really hate that. Not that anyone really likes it, but you know what I mean. See...I can't even write clearly since I've lost the use of a nostril. Anway, I got into a nice hot shower and sniffed and snorted and then realized that Neti Season had arrived. When I was pregnant with Zeca, I was on the verge of a full blown sinus infection and didn't relish the idea of taking antibiotics. The midwife suggested that I try a neti pot. I had never heard of a neti pot and she then described the use of the apparatus. You fill the little pot with salt water and the pour the water through your sinuses. I couldn't imagine how that worked from a basic body mechanics standpoint but went out and bought a beautiful ceramic neti pot on faith. When I got home, I read the directions and awkwardly followed them. I poured the warm salt water into one side of my nose and it miraculously drained out the other side, along with some other stuff that I don't really think you want me to describe. Let's just say that there was some impressive nasal discharge. After a session with the neti, I was able to breathe easily. I used it for a couple more days and my sinuses were clear. I have been a neti convert ever since.
I know the process sounds strange and maybe a little gross. Sure...when you are getting used to it, it feels a tiny bit like how I imagine drowning might feel. Once you get the hang of it though, it is amazing. Go out and get yourself one. I promise you clear sinuses all through the winter...oh, and kids find it fascinating to watch. It's fun for the whole family!
